Which Disc Golf Cart is Right for You?

Shoulders tired??? You don’t have to be one of us old guys to enjoy the luxury of taking some of the weight off.

In this blog post we will go over a few of the physical advantages, costs, highlights, and aggravations of owning and using a cart. So which one is right for you? Read more to find out!

With the average disc golfer carrying anywhere from 15-20 discs in their bag and walking anywhere from 1-3 miles per round wouldn’t it be nice to take a load off? (You young guys are laughing but you’ll be here one day.) A quality cart can do just that, take some of the load off.

I tested 3 different carts from some of the most reputable brands in the industry and here is what I experienced.

Most Maneuverable: Zuca Compact Ledgestone Edition

I got this cart playing the Ledgestone Open back in 2020 but you can still purchace a similar model in the Ledgestone shop online for $199.99. Which is a great starter price if you’re not wanting to spend too much to get in to a cart. Here are a few of the key features.

  • Carry up to 15 discs without back strain (built-in rack included)
  • Sturdy, patented frame doubles as a portable seat rated to safely support up to 300 lbs
  • 44″ Telescoping handle
  • Weight: 10 lbs

This is easily the lightest and the most maneuverable of the 3. If your local courses trails are a bit on the rougher side but you still want the luxury of a cart this is for you. It takes roots, rocks, bumps and slopes without too much fuss. Only downside with this particular model is its capacity.

I don’t have many of the accessories that are available for zuca carts so I can’t speak too much on those but there are plenty available as well as color combos for their higher end models.

Optimus Prime: Rovic RV1D

Ever seen a transformer in real life?? Well you have now. And just like Optimus Prime there isn’t much the Rovic RV1D can’t handle. Coming in at a very reasonable price point of $249.99 this is my current cart.

One of the biggest advantages of this cart is the fact you don’t transfer all your discs from your bag to a cart. This is huge when you play a variety of courses with differentiating terrain. Not cart friendly? No problem, just grab your bag and go. Playing an open course today such as a ball golf style course? Strap in and lets roll and don’t forget you can take everything with you as well as the kitchen sink.

This thing has so many options, attachable seat, comes with umbrella straps and mount, quick release for easy folding and storage, handle mounted brake so no rolling away, a large storage tray, and two click gear accessory tabs.

I’m really not supposed to play favorites but man is it hard not to have one with this thing. There’s no balance point like the two wheel carts so you don’t usually have to worry about skittling your discs everywhere and with an adjustable console height it makes pushing a breeze. It also holds discs higher so less bending over. Here is some info from the company:

ProActive Disc Golf is the US distributor for the Rovic and Clicgear lines of carts. (Clicgear is the largest cart brand in traditional golf) We are the wholesale distributor for the RV1D cart, along with disc golf accessories, trophies and our own drinkware line called Tempercraft.

The Rolls-Royce: Ridgeroller R3

Badass and Bombproof is what immediately comes to mind when I think about the Ridgeroller R3. I mean this is like a 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon 650PH Power by Petty 448 HEMI. Not that I have looked or anything.

With unmatched build quality, and an almost infinite number of color combinations, the Ridgeroller R3 is literally hand built from the ground up with your specifications in mind. (The stickers and DaddyMac decals were added afterward though).

At one point I think I was able to carry up to 40 discs with this thing with all the accessory pouches. The only downsides are a hefty price tag (mine with all the options was well over $700), weight, and sometimes uneven balance point that caused a few spills. However, YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER CART, EVER. PERIOD. Hell, your kids probably won’t either if you don’t bury yourself in it.

So if you’re bored at work, maybe pop over and throw a few color combos together on their custom cart builder page. You won’t be disappointed.

So which one is for you?

Like most things in life, it just depends. What is your price point? Where are most of your rounds played and what is the terrain like? Are you new to disc golf? How many discs do you carry? Are you playing multiple rounds in a day?

Before committing to one or the other ask yourself these questions and more. For me the ability to keep my discs in my bag and the ability to quickly choose if I want my cart or not was a big factor in choosing my favorite. For you it might be the weight, what things your like to carry with you. Regardless there is an option out there for you.

May the wind always be in your favor. Happy throwing!
